Red gum dresser

Red Gum

Red Gum is the timber of choice at Gabra Timber Creations. It is a hard, heavy timber, usually with an interlocked grain, which often produces fiddle back figured grain.

These characteristics make it both challenging and rewarding to work with. All the Red Gum timber we use is milled from trees which have fallen naturally, have been reclaimed from lagoons and private property or is recycled from farm outbuildings.

Blackwood

Blackwood is a popular and beautiful timber, which has traditionally been used in fine furniture construction. It varies  greatly in colour from golden-brown to dark brown, sometimes with a reddish tint or streak. The grain is usually straight, but sometimes produces mild to very high fiddle
back characteristics.

Mountain Ash

Mountain Ash is sold commercially as either Tasmanian Oak or Victorian Ash. It has a pale pink to pale brown (honey) colour, with a usually straight grain. It accepts both clear lacquer and stain well, and is the most common hardwood furniture timber.

Other Timbers

Many other timbers are used when available. Most are rare or non- commercial types such as:

  • Cooba, or native willow, similar to Blackwood but much darker with a stronger grain.
  • Black Red Gum. A naturally occurring (but very rare) form of Red Gum Similar to Ebony.
  • Buloke and Forest Oak. Both members of the Casuarina family. Very hard and heavy, varying in colour but always displaying strong medullary rays.
  • Silky oak. Pale pink to reddish-brown in colour with prominent medullary rays.
  • Myrtle Beech. Reddish-brown and quite consistent in colour, with a fine straight grain.

Gabra Timber Creations will work also with any recycled timber or your own timber.
